A statuesque beauty for the back of the border, Cephalaria gigantea is an architectural perennial that brings height, lightness, and movement to the garden. Towering stems reach up to 2.5m tall, topped with soft lemon-yellow, pincushion-like flowers that dance in the breeze from early to mid-summer. The airy, see-through habit allows it to rise above other plants without casting heavy shade, making it an ideal choice for layered planting schemes. Loved by bees and other pollinators, it creates a delightful, wildlife-friendly focal point.

  • Height: 200–250cm
  • Spread: 75–90cm

Plant in full sun or light dappled shade in well-drained soil. Cephalaria gigantea prefers fertile conditions and appreciates a sheltered spot where it won’t be buffeted by strong winds. It dislikes soggy ground in winter, so avoid heavy clay unless well improved with grit or organic matter. Once established, it's fairly drought-tolerant. Stake young plants in spring if needed to support their tall stems, especially in exposed gardens.

This is a wonderful plant for creating vertical interest in naturalistic borders, wildflower-style plantings, or cottage gardens. Combine with grasses and other tall perennials like Verbena bonariensis, Thalictrum, Veronicastrum, or Sanguisorba to build an elegant, layered effect. Its soft yellow blooms pair well with mauves, whites, and blues for a romantic, breezy palette. Also ideal at the back of large containers for a bold feature in urban gardens.

  • Hardiness: Hardy perennial (H7 – very hardy)
  • Growth speed: Fast once established
  • Pollinator-friendly: Yes – loved by bees and butterflies
  • Pet safety: No known toxicity to pets
