Stipa tenuissima, commonly known as Mexican feather grass or fine-stemmed feather grass, is a species of ornamental grass native to North America, specifically Mexico, Texas, and New Mexico. It belongs to the Poaceae family and is renowned for its delicate, feathery appearance and graceful movement in the breeze.
Stipa tenuissima forms vibrant clumps of bright green foliage, adorned with airy, silvery flower plumes in summer. It makes an excellent border specimen and is stunning when planted in drifts. This grass thrives in light, well-drained soils and full sun. Ensure it is well-watered before planting and until established. It reaches a height of 60 cm and a spread of 45 cm.
Stipa tenuissima is relatively low-maintenance. It requires little watering once established and generally doesn't require fertilizer. However, it may self-seed prolifically, which can be managed by removing spent flower heads if desired.
Anemanthele lessoniana, or pheasant's tail is a remarkable grass that offers vibrant colour, dynamic movement, and structural beauty throughout the year. It grows in a fountain-like clump of slender, semi-evergreen leaves that start off green and gradually develop striking yellow, orange, and red streaks. This colourful display intensifies during the colder months, creating a particularly lovely effect. Additionally, in late summer, the grass produces delicate sprays of airy flowerheads, adding an extra touch of elegance. Eventual height and spread 1mtr x 1mtr.
