Stipa tenuissima, commonly known as Mexican feather grass or fine-stemmed feather grass, is a species of ornamental grass native to North America, specifically Mexico, Texas, and New Mexico. It belongs to the Poaceae family and is renowned for its delicate, feathery appearance and graceful movement in the breeze.
Stipa tenuissima forms vibrant clumps of bright green foliage, adorned with airy, silvery flower plumes in summer. It makes an excellent border specimen and is stunning when planted in drifts. This grass thrives in light, well-drained soils and full sun. Ensure it is well-watered before planting and until established. It reaches a height of 60 cm and a spread of 45 cm.
Stipa tenuissima is relatively low-maintenance. It requires little watering once established and generally doesn't require fertilizer. However, it may self-seed prolifically, which can be managed by removing spent flower heads if desired.
