Brunnera macrophylla is a much-loved shade-loving perennial, grown for its heart-shaped, rough-textured foliage and sprays of delicate, sky-blue flowers that resemble forget-me-nots. Flowering in mid to late spring, it brings light and freshness to woodland gardens, shady borders, and containers. After flowering, its lush foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season, providing texture and contrast among other perennials.

  • Height: 30โ€“45cm
  • Spread: 45โ€“60cm

Thrives in partial to full shade in rich, moist but well-drained soil. It will tolerate some sun if kept well watered. Water during dry periods, particularly in the first season. Remove faded flower stems after blooming if desired, though they do not detract from the plantโ€™s overall appearance. In early spring, remove any winter-damaged foliage to make room for new growth. Brunnera can be divided in early autumn or spring.

Ideal for planting under trees, along shady paths, or as ground cover in mixed shade borders. Combine with other shade-loving plants like Heuchera, Hosta, Pulmonaria, and ferns. The blue flowers make a striking spring combination with yellow or white bulbs like Narcissus or Anemone blanda. In containers, pair with silver-leaved or dark foliage plants for contrast and texture.
