Liatris spicata, commonly known as dense blazing star or prairie gay feather, is a species of flowering plant native to eastern North America. It belongs to the Asteraceae family, which includes sunflowers, daisies, and asters.
This perennial plant typically grows in tall spikes, reaching heights of 60 to 120 cm. The flowers are densely packed along the spike and are typically purple or magenta in colour, though some cultivars may have white or pink flowers. Liatris spicata blooms from mid to late summer, attracting pollinators such as butterflies and bees and is happy in dry conditions, making it an ideal choice for water-wise gardens.
It is relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in a variety of soil types, making it a versatile choice for many garden settings.
