Aquilegia ‘Black Barlow’ is a striking, double-flowered variety of columbine with rich, velvety blooms in deep purple-black – almost black – held on slender, upright stems above soft, ferny foliage. The intricate, spurless flowers appear from late spring into early summer, bringing a dramatic, elegant note to borders, containers, and shady corners. Part of the Barlow series bred for their distinctive pompom-style flowers and excellent garden performance.

  • Height: 60–75cm
  • Spread: 30–40cm

Sold as 1ltr Pots

Plant in sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Aquilegias are generally undemanding and will tolerate a range of soils as long as drainage is good. Water during prolonged dry spells in their first year. Deadhead to prevent self-seeding if you want to preserve the variety, or allow to self-sow freely for a more naturalistic effect. Cut back flowering stems after bloom and remove old leaves if needed to encourage fresh growth.

‘Black Barlow’ pairs beautifully with lighter or contrasting colours – try it alongside soft pinks, whites, or lime greens for a bold effect. Ideal with plants like Astrantia, Brunnera, Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’, or underplanted with spring bulbs. Works well in shady borders, woodland gardens, or among grasses and hardy geraniums. In containers, team with silver or green foliage and soft perennials for a moody, romantic mix.
