Penstemon ‘Catherine de la Mare’ is an elegant, long-flowering perennial producing slender spires of soft lavender-blue, bell-shaped blooms with a delicate white throat. Flowering steadily from early summer into autumn, it brings a light, airy presence to borders and containers. Its semi-evergreen foliage forms a tidy clump, while the flower stems rise above, adding gentle movement and structure. A reliable, classic cultivar with excellent garden performance and graceful charm.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Penstemons dislike sitting in cold, wet soil over winter, so improve drainage if needed. Water regularly during dry spells in the first year. To encourage continuous blooming, deadhead faded flowers promptly. In autumn, leave the top growth in place to protect the crown, then cut back in spring once new shoots appear. A mulch in spring will help feed the plant and conserve moisture.

Penstemon ‘Catherine de la Mare’ looks wonderful threaded through cottage garden borders, wildlife-friendly plantings, or soft pastel schemes. Pair with perennials like Salvia nemorosa, Nepeta, Scabiosa, and Geraniums, or contrast with the upright forms of Veronicastrum or ornamental grasses. In containers, combine with silver foliage or pale pinks for a refined, romantic look.
